Taking the weekend off.  Hopefully the guest articles will be ready for the coming week.  My stats are really low.  Please ask your friends to take a look.

  1. Your trashbag bivvy looks very familiar to me. I used that exact same concept many times in my backpacking trips in Germany. I even used it on cold drizzly nights in the forest and was able to stay reletively dry. Not the most pleasant way to spend the night but it works quite well and gives one a real sense of adventure and accomplishment to be able to pull it off and survive the night and then resume your hike the next morning with nobody you might meet on the trail will be the wiser because sleeping trailside in Germany is generally verboten. After a night on the trail I like to hike into the next village and splurge with the money I saved sleeping for free on a grand breakfast. I also like your concept of observing the survival habits of the homeless. Some are very successful at it and are quite content. As long as they don't have mental issues or substance abuse issues then it could be a very satisfying way of life. When I travel I like to think of myself as a hobo with money because I'm employed with paid vacation time, credit cards and a home to return to. And as always I am respectful to the land and practice leave no trace camping.

  2. You can't beat the price, weight, and pack space for such a bivvy. It's truly the kind you could beg, borrow, or steal. Forgot to mention that you could use the dental floss to make a ridge line through the bivvy to give a bit more air circulation if you could find something to tie it off to. I agree with your concept of saving on one thing in order to splurge on something else. Love the phrase and concept of "hobo with money." Must find a way to work that into the conversation next time I talk with someone about frugal travel. Thanks for commenting.
